Thanks Andy for posting this. I missed a few when I was blogging. :)

(and of course I dugg it!)
  • Andy Beal · 2 years ago
    Thanks all!

@Tamar - thanks for sticking around for the last session, and thanks for the digg. :-)
  • Tamar Weinberg · 2 years ago
You bet! It was a good one! :)
  • Marshall Kirkpatrick · 2 years ago
As someone who also offers to relieve people of their money to set them up with these kinds of services :) I recommend checking out Ask.com blogsearch, which only indexes feeds with a minimum number of Bloglines subscribers for spam control, FeedYes.com for easy but powerful RSS feed creation, FeedDigest for splicing multiple feeds together into one (and filtering for duplicates, like in Yahoo, Google and Topix news search feeds)and GMail for turning email lists into RSS feeds (dedicated account - filter to tags, tags have feeds, add additional filtering as desired).

Definitely some stuff in this post though that I haven't looked at before, will be bookmarking and sharing for sure. Keep up the great work, Andy!
  • Andy Beal · 2 years ago
@Marshall - thanks for the additions!

    I've been using TalkDigger for sometime -- http://www.talkdigger.com .
  • Seocracy · 2 years ago
This is bullshit. Sorry. Another top 10 list?!?!? And a poorly considered one at that?

I am so bloody tired of seeing weak excuses for 'news' frontpaging digg.....that was 30 seconds of my life Ill never get back :)
  • Jeremy Pavleck · 2 years ago
Bloody brilliant - wish I would have known about Yahoo pipes a lot earlier, this thing is addictive!

One important resource you forgot - Omgili
    http://buzz.omgili.com/
    http://buzz.omgili.com/graphs.html

It tracks buzz on forums, newsgroups, mailing lists, QnA sites and more discussion based site.
  • Chase Saunders · 2 years ago
How could you leave out http://buzzfeed.com ?

The entire editorial process is driven by one of the best buzz-detection algorithms around.
  • Andy Beal · 2 years ago
@Seocracy - did you even read the list? It's not a top 10 BS list and it takes more than 30 seconds to read.

If you came here from Digg, didn't you read the title and the description first? It explained what you were getting. Then you wasted another 30 precious seconds adding a comment that basically said the article wasted your time - oh the irony.
  • inf · 2 years ago
My site is used by many for what might be considered "Buzz Monitoring".

    http://ectio.us/

Try it out if you like.
  • AndyBeard · 2 years ago
Have you found Serph useful? I have found it misses out some results, but does offer a combination of sources.
  • Andy Beal · 2 years ago
@Andy both Serph and Distilled offer a good solution if you want to put your monitoring on autopilot, but both services will capture only about 90% of the conversation.
  • Eric · 2 years ago
Does anybody here use Buzzlogic? I am looking for an alternative...these guys are price prohibitive.
  • Joseph Fiore · 2 years ago
@Eric, feel free to contact me through my comment link if your looking for an alternative.

@Andy, its been awhile since we last spoke.

Although I'm not a proponent of free tools because the aren't as good at depth of social media sourcing, I will suggest one helpful addition to your list of free buzz monitoring tools.

    It's actually a bit of a goldmine.

Topix.net has a substantial forum component that isn't searchable through their own site. And although Topix forum posts are searchable through our RepuTrace(TM) product, there is a decent and working "free" alternative (not real-time, and the results can prove to be outdate - TIP: sort by date for best results).

Set-up a custom search using Google-Co-op. Its pretty straightforward - just point Google to the search area. Here is a working example on a search for one of my favourite home improvement centers.

There were a few here that I was unaware of.
  • iwilker · 2 years ago
Andy -- thanks for linking to this from Brogan's blog; I'm right in the middle of setting up a "monitoring dashboard" on NetVibes for a team of bloggers; this will be a big help.
  • Seocracy · 2 years ago
    quoting Andy:
@Seocracy - did you even read the list? It’s not a top 10 BS list and it takes more than 30 seconds to read.

If you came here from Digg, didn’t you read the title and the description first? It explained what you were getting. Then you wasted another 30 precious seconds adding a comment that basically said the article wasted your time - oh the irony.
    ------------------------------------------------
    Dearest Andy,
Despite what you might expect, my comment here today is not in an effort to further undermine your blog. Rather, I am writing you as a concerned SEO-Citizen who is worried about how your blog is affecting the public reputation of other SEO specialists.

What am I talking about? Well Andy, for starters: one must always use caution when employing terms like 'ironic', or 'irony'. In short, I believe your above use/abuse of the term is somewhat incongruous with usages laid out by most major dictionaries and style guides.

Now, while I'm not typically the kind of person who goes out of his way to lampoon others for misuse of the English language, I am willing to make an exception in the case of your blog.

    Why?

Well Andy, it’s because I'm still feeling like you and your blog owe me compensation for that 30 seconds -- wait, no; make that 47 seconds -- I wasted reading the above post way back on August 27th. In short, I've come back looking for a post that will redeem your blog and make it worthy of my praise, and dare I say, a place somewhere near the bottom of my Google feed reader list.

However, after thoroughly reading your posts (and having experienced disturbingly low conversion rates on Splogs of content scraped from your RSS feeds), I am forced to conclude that you will be never be able to atone for your reckless, irresponsible & mind-numbing posts by providing either A) truly relevant & unique content or, at the very least B) content worthy of monetization.

In fact, I have come to the conclusion that, like a bad SAT question, your Blog is to Knowledge what Chinese is to Food: I just feel hungry again shortly after reading it.

So, fellow blogger, in closing let me recommend that you give up this silly little website all together and instead focus entirely on writing lyrics for Alanis Morissette, who I believe shares your liberal opinion concerning the use of rhetorical/literary devices like 'irony'.
Oh, and since I expect you’ll be shutting this blog down after reading this sound advice, would you mind 301 redirecting all your PR 4> pages to www.seocracy.com? Thanks.

All the best, and in good humor,
    Seocracy

    Andy,
Good post, as usual. I want to flag one more tool that will help anyone interested in better monitoring. It's called the Buzzmonitor and will parse any RSS feed to add, extract tags, measure authority and let user vote and tag content. I conceived it for the World Bank, it's now available for all to use, in open source. More here: buzzm.worldbank.org

    Cheers,
    Pierre Guillaume Wielezynski

  • Paul Biggs · 2 years ago
Great resource! Another tool I use frequently is Attensa's rss reader -- in particular, the "persistent search" feature, which keeps a constant eye on anything new coming from Google, Yahoo, Digg, flickr, del.icio.us, Wikipedia, etc (tracking both client and competitor keywords). It converts it all to RSS, and you can set different keywords to notify you via desktop alerts if they are very important to you. It's an enterprise-strength version of Google Alerts, and keeps it out of my email inbox where I don't want these types of things piling up (100+ alerts a day in Outlook is not fun).

Perfect for me, as I already use some of them, but some of the others had slipped by me. But no longer!

Thanks, I will be adding them to my stable of tools for everyday use.

Great list! Forgive the flagrant self-promotion here but those of you who want to see what serious product mavens have to say about specific products should check out my site, ThisNext.com. ThisNext is a social shopping service that has millions of shoppers coming to read what our product recommenders have to say about particular items. We don't do time series buzz tracking but can give you good snapshots of what mavens/shoppers like, why, and what other products they are into
  • Jonathan Moody · 1 year ago
Good list and great to see that there are some forum searching tools there. People in this space are soooo blog obsessed. Forums/Boards / User Groups frequently provide much more UGC than blogs and for many purchase decisions I'd rather see what 50+ people think about product/service A than the wisdom of a so called guru /"influential" and the people who comment on his/her posts.

Another point - imagine you use these tools and find 500 references to your product/service. You need some structured analysis to gain the insight about what people are saying, who they are, where they talk and the impact that makes.

Awesome list of services here Andy - thank you. I have to say using Google Alerts has become part of my daily routine now, so handy!
  • Herbalife · 1 year ago
Kind of surprised that Google Alerts is 25 of 26 as a buzz tracking tool. It is one of the best to track anything related to your industry or your competitors on a daily basis.
  • Andy Beal · 1 year ago
@Herbalife - the list isn't in much of an order. That said, Google Alerts is very limited because it only tracks Google channels and only offers email alerts--no RSS. :-(
  • Marc · 1 year ago
I have several of these services in place to keep up on news, rep and other things.

so to say that this is just for linkbait is not accurate all.

I know several people and even companies who know nothing about any of these services, but they would benefit dramatically from them.

initially when u see google news, digg, and reditt at the top of the post you think, "who the hell does not know about this already?" but if you continue u might get an understanding that is way more than google news or digg

Mainly this post is just alerting you about these services. There is a massive case to be made about using a few select ones, which in itself can be a long post. So, he would have had to write a short book in order to tell everyone what specific profound reasons there are to use many of these services.

for anyone who does not know why to use several of these, then u r at a disadvantage, seriously...

i told my friends and colleagues the same exact thing about one of these services two weeks ago

The Aberdeen Group also did a report on this area. You also need to think beyond "buzz" and "reputation" - this is also about bringing the voice of the consumer into brand/product/service development, customer service/relations, quality control...

Compete.com is one thing I must comment on.. they're a lot better than Alexa.. in that they actually 'track' the website's visits.. and not against their 'guesstimates'

Nevertheless, there's another site similar to compete.com that I don't see mentioned here (or I missed)
Quantcast. Their concept is similar to that of Compete, but they're better ;)
