Marketing Pilgrim: Buy a Google Computer for $199!

  • Mike Mothner · 2 years ago
A "Google" Computer for $199 - I will admit that the price is good, but is this product actually something consumers will buy? I am curious as to what the benefits are to having such a specialized, yet limited type of computer such as this one.

@Mike - there are probably a lot of people that would have only limited needs-basic email, internet, etc-which this computer would meet. :-)

I'm might just go get one for my Mother. She has never had an email address, never seen any of my sites or pics online. And it's her Birthday Sunday!

That is super cheap. I wouldn't expect to play games on it but for people who cannot afford 500$+ systems that is great. The cheaper systems become, the more the internet population will grow. Thats only a good thing for us marketers!

Hopefully in 3-5 years we will see a sub 100 $ model!

    @ jeff

"just glad I beat Andy at something!"

    I didn't know that was possible ;)

Google has a vision of cheap and network based operating systems. Computing is becoming less and less hardware and place oriented.
  • Andy Beal · 2 years ago
@Jeff - nice photos, but no source? ;-)

Looks like a piece of junk system to me!

And what is the Linux GOS? Is it developed by Google? And if not, what makes this computer a Google PC?
  • Andy C · 2 years ago
A Interweb enabled 'Google' PC equipped with, err, OpenOffice.

    Oh - the delicious irony.

I wish this truly was the inhouse linux that google runs, but it seems to be independent:

gOS is an independent operating system devoted to making Google Applications and other free, web software more widespread and accessible to the world. gOS is not affiliated with Google or their partners.
  • Andy Beal · 2 years ago
@the about - yep, as I said, this is not an official Google computer. :-)
  • minicix · 2 years ago
Then what is Google about this computer? Why is it called so?

'a variant of the popular Ubuntu but with lots of optimization for Google products.'
By Google products they must mean Toolbar and Google links in favorites added by default:)
  • don williams · 2 years ago
Well, at least, one can't complain about the price. Personally, I will stick with my 'it can run everything' Macs, damn the price!

    that's amazing to hear it.

Is this official Google Operation System? or is just modification of Ubuntu?

What with the current GBP/US Dollar exchange rate I can pick up this machine for under £100. Not bad all things considered.

And to think that Alejandro Zuzenber said in SMX Argentina 2007 that all this Google-gossip wasn't true and that Google didn't intend on making a Google-phone, etc. Suuuuuuuure ;)

I actually think it's overpriced, at least not as cheap as some people think.
